Our annual Awards Day celebration is always something special.  We get to hear the student and adult winners of this year’s NCPS contests – the best of the best – and pick up copies of Pinesong.  And it’s always heart-warming to meet the students and their parents and teachers.  For a complete schedule of events, click here.  Don’t miss this special day during a beautiful time of year at Weymouth Center for the Arts in Southern Pines.

to Jan Harrington, whose manuscript, Waiting for the Hurricane, won this year’s Lena Shull Book Award.  Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, the contest judge, said, “These honest poems, the kind that remain with you, are about family in all of its complexities, its love-hate world of birthing, of wake keepings and funerals, its deep secrets and unforgitvable sins.”  Her manuscript will be published by Saint Andrews University Press, and she will give a reading and workshop at Poetry Day Hickory on April 29.  For more information about Harrington’s new collection, click here.  For information about Poetry Day Hickory, see announcement below.

Upcoming Events

Western North Carolina poets participating in the Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet Series will be reading their work at the 15th annual Spring Literary Festival at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee on Monday, April 3, at the A. K. Hines University Theater from 12-1 p.m.  Poets reading include Pat Riviere-Seel, the region’s Distinguished Poet for 2016-17, and four student poets: Mary Coggins, Benjamin Cutler, Jade Shuler, and Cathy Sky.  The student poets will read again at area public libraries on April 5, April 18, April 20, and May 8.  For further information, contact Pat Riviere-Seel.

Poetry Day Hickory will take place on Saturday, April 29, at Lenoir Rhyne University in Hickory.  Featured readers will be Jan Harrington, winner of this year’s Lena Shull Book Award for her collection Waiting for the Hurricane, and Joseph Mills, author of six poetry collections.  Both poets will give readings and conduct workshops.  Mills’ workshop is entitled “Working in the Delta: Prose Poetry and Flash Fiction,” while Harrington’s workshop is “Memory, Myth, & Family: A Primal Source for Poems.”  Registration ($10 for workshops) and open mic sign-up start at 11:30 a.m., followed by an afternoon of readings, workshops, and concluding with open mic.  For a full schedule, click here.  To register and for further information, contact Scott Owens.
