Thanks for a wonderful Awards Day!

Our annual Awards Day celebration is always something special, and this year was no different.  Thanks to all the students who read their prize-winning poems, and to their parents and teachers who came to celebrate and support them.  Thanks also to the adult members of the Society who read their remarkable work.  And thanks to Susan Lefler for a moving tribute to Kathryn Stripling Byer, former North Carolina Poet Laureate and very deserving dedicatee of this year’s Pinesong.   The weather was warm and infectious and so were the spirits in the room – an event to be remembered for a long time.

Kathryn Stripling Byer (1944-2017)

We were deeply saddened to receive word that Kathryn Stripling Byer, former Poet Laureate of North Carolina and dedicatee of this year’s Pinesong, passed away on Monday, June 5.  This is a grievous loss of a literary luminary beloved in our state.  We send heart-felt condolences to all Kay’s family and friends.  You may want to re-read one of her poetry collections to remember her.  We were so fortunate to be able to honor Kay on Awards Day and to hear her greetings to the Society.
