LGRWC 2017 skyscraperREGISTER FOR THE 2017 LOOKING GLASS ROCK WRITERS’ CONFERENCE AT BREVARD COLLEGE ON MAY 18-21.  Featuring Jane Smiley (fiction), Robert Morgan (poetry), and Sy Montgomery (non-fiction).  Apply at www.lgrwc.org.  Deadline March 1.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Jan Harrington, whose manuscript, Waiting for the Hurricane, won this year’s Lena Shull Book Award.  Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, the contest judge, said, “These honest poems, the kind that remain with you, are about family in all of its complexities, its love-hate world of birthing, of wake keepings and funerals, its deep secrets and unforgitvable sins.”  Her manuscript will be published by Saint Andrews University Press, and she will give a reading and workshop at Poetry Day Hickory in April.  For more information about Harrington’s new collection, click here.

March Meeting

Our annual Sam Ragan Day meeting will take place on March 18, 2017 at Weymouth Center for the Arts in Southern Pines.  Featured poets will be Peter Makuck and Marjory Wentworth, Poetry Laureate of South Carolina, along with our usual open mic.  For a more detailed schedule of events, click here.  Don’t miss another great day of poetry at beautiful Weymouth.

New NCPS Officers

The North Carolina Poetry Society has elected new officers and Board members for the 2017-19 term: Sam Barbee, president; Alice Osborn, vice president for programming; Joan Barasovska and Laura Younger, co-vice presidents for membership; Dana Stone, recording secretary; Cal Nordt, corresponding secretary; Bill Griffin, treasurer; Crystal Simone Smith, adult contests chair; Michael Beadle, student contests chair; and Tori Reynolds and Ty Stumpf, Board members at large.  For brief biographies of the candidates, click here.  The new officers and Board members will “shadow” current Board members for the next two meetings and assume their leadership responsibilities following the May 28 meeting.

Upcoming Events

Press 53 will be holding its annual Gathering of Poets on Saturday, March 4, in Winston-Salem at the downtown Marriott hotel. In this all-day workshop series, participants choose four workshops from six offered by our award-winning faculty. The cost to attend for NC Poetry Society members is $135 and includes a continental breakfast and a buffet lunch. For those arriving Friday, there will be a Poetry Crawl through the downtown Arts District, sponsored by Winston-Salem Writers, our new co-host for the Gathering of Poets. For complete details, visit Gathering_of_Poets, or email Kevin@Press53.com.

Walk into April will take place on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Barton College in Wilson, NC.  The North Carolina Poetry Society and the Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet Series again celebrate our state’s accomplished poets.  This year’s event features Bruce Lader and Beth Copeland as well as Amber Flora Thomas, Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for Down East.  The program runs from 9:45 until 3:00.  For more information contact Rebecca Godwin at rlgodwin(at)barton.edu or Marty Silverthorne at marty.koda(at)yahoo.com.
